|Description: 19TH C. WESTERN COWBOY TINTYPE FRAMED BEFORE AND AFTER SET. |
THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH IS OF TWO YOUNG MEN DRESSED IN WESTERN CLOTHES TYPICAL OF THE LATE 19th CENTURY. THE SECOND PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS THE SAME TWO MEN, YEARS LATER, NOW SHOWING HOW THE RAVAGES OF TIME HAVE AFFECTED THEM. IN THE FIRST, THE TWO MEN LOOK HALE AND HEARTY, WHILE THE SECOND SHOWS THEM OLDER, POSING WITH A BOTTLE OF ALCOHOL AND A CANE, AS IF, BY THEN, ONE OF THEM HAD HAD A BUM LEG.
THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE ASSUMED TO BE FROM KANSAS CITY, KANSAS AS THIS IS WHERE THIS PHOTO WAS FOUND AND PURCHASED IN THE LATE 1960s.
BOTH PHOTOGRAPHS ARE IN THEIR ORIGINAL PAPER HOUSING. THEY ALSO HAVE ORIGINAL ANTIQUE FRAMES WITH GLASS MADE OF SPELTER AND BOTH HAVE THE SAME UNIQUE EASEL FOR TABLE TOP USE. BOTH THE TINTYPES AND FRAMES ARE IN EXCELLENT OVERALL CONDITION.
THEY ARE APPROXIMATELY 5.25 INCHES TALL AT HIGHEST POINT OF FRAME AND 3.75 INCHES WIDE.
Tintype: Popular misnomer for the melaninotype and ferrotype process; tintype images were actually produced on thin sheets of iron painted with Japan vanish. While the period of the tintype's popularity was short-lived (1858 to 1865), the tintype has the distinction of having been produced in quantity longer than any other nineteenth-century process (1858 to 1930).
