Item #2874 - Ansonia Indian Mantel Set

Description: The case of this clock is made of black slate inlaid with multicolored marble insets and gold-washed ornamental engravings. Attached to the top of the clock case, by two nuts and bolts, is a bronze plated spelter classical-style hunting Indian with dog statute, having the original bow and arrow in hand, attached by the original single screw.

The statue and clock case are in excellent condition for being one hundred or more years of age, showing no damage other than wear from being polished, cared for and used. The clock movement and case have recently been disassembled, cleaned, oiled, regulated and restored.

When disassembled the Indian with dog statue was examined and a signature was found on the underside bottom, that of "N.M.S N.Y. NO. 681," designating it as made by Nicholas Muller's Sons with their design number.

The clock has an 8-day signed "Ansonia" movement, with an open escapement equipped with ruby pallets. It strikes the hours and half hour on a pleasant sounding gong using a rack and snail mechanism. The original dial is porcelain and is free of cracks and chips. The bezel is of a thick and substantial cast brass with a good and strong hinge. The glass is beveled and has no chips, cracks or breaks. The back of the clock is open and there's no evidence of it ever actually having an access door.

Everything is original and in good repair with no worn parts. Once started this clock is hard to stop, keeps very good time and is in overall excellent condition. It can be safely assumed this movement has many years of use left in it before any work would be required other than the normal cleaning and oiling.

Standing 18 inches tall at the highest point, the statue itself makes up almost half of the height. The clock case also has a width of approximately 11 inches and is 5.5 inches deep.

Paired with this impressive clock is a set of classical-style Indian warrior statues made of bronze plated spelter, each attached by a single bolt and nut, standing on black slate and marble bases. Matched in size and style, one of the statues is of a female Indian, armed with an elaborate staff as well as a bow. She is dressed in a short, draped gown with a beaded necklace and belt. The other statue is of a male Indian warrior, also holding a staff as well as a long double-headed arrow, perhaps for the female Indian as she has no arrows. He also wears beaded necklaces, along with a wide belt into which is tucked a knife and a tomahawk. Feathers adorn his hair and his expression is one of concentration, opened-mouth and eyes staring. The female's expression, on the other hand, is calm and serene. While the marble in the statue bases match that of the clock case, the gold-washed engravings, reminiscent of the clock case, are not the exact the same in design. Both of the statues and bases combined stand 19.5 inches tall. The black slate and marble bases are 4.75 inches tall and the statues are approximately 14.75 inches tall. While unnoticed when viewing from the front, the uppermost black slate, just under and to the back of the female Indian figure, is missing a corner. A photograph of this missing corner is supplied below.

This is a very impressive clock to look at, use, enjoy and admire. The size of this set is ideal for the average fireplace mantle. The total weight of this clock set is 28 pounds.
