Item #2867 - Rare Muller Indian Clock

Description: Late 19th Century Nicholas Muller's Sons Indian Warrior on Horse Clock.

The case of this clock is made of a thick black enameled paint on cast iron. Attached to the top of the clock case, by two nuts and bolts, is a copper plated spelter Indian on his horse, with the original fancy spear and reins. Plus, on the two sides of the clock are two large copper plated spelter Columns with an unusual Indian motif.

The statue and clock case are in excellent condition for being, plus or minus, One Hundred and Twenty-five years of age, showing no damage other than wear from being polished, cared for and used. The Clock movement and case has recently been disassembled, cleaned, oiled, regulated and restored.

The Indian on horse statue and columns were examined but no signature was found while disassembled. The original Nicholas Muller's Sons label remains on the back of the case and is obscured by what looks to be an old repair or sales sticker. While neither sticker can be read easily, there is enough wording seen to ascertain the name and that the movement is original to the clock.

The 8 day pendulum movement, with unusual open escapement and speed regulator, is signed N. MULLER'S SONS, PAT. APR 25, 82, NEW YORK. Instead of a key, an adjustable Slow-Fast indicator, on the dial, under the open escapement is used to fine tune the movement for time keeping accuracy. The original dial is porcelain and has some tight hairline cracks and has had some old professional repairs around the winding holes. Even with these blemishes the dial presents itself beautifully while adding character, charm and proof of age. The bezel is of a thick and substantial cast brass with a good and strong hinge. The glass is beveled and has no chips, cracks or breaks.

This clock is unusual when compared to other clocks of the same time period such as Ansonia and New Haven Clocks. It has no back door to access the movement or pendulum. The movement is attached by screws to two opposing thick pieces of wood which are attached to the cast iron back plate of the clock case.

The pendulum is installed from the bottom of the clock as there is no bottom wood sounding board. The hours and half hour are struck on a pleasant sounding gong which is also attached to the same two thick pieces of wood as the movement.

Everything is original and in good repair with no overly worn parts. Once started this clock is hard to stop, keeps very good time and is in overall very good condition. It can be safely assumed this movement has many years of use left in it before any work would be required other than the normal cleaning and oiling.

A very impressive clock to look at and massive in size, weighting in at 33 pounds and standing 22 inches tall at the highest point, which is the spear. The clock case also has a width of 18 inches and is 6 1/2 inches deep. It will require a sturdy and level mantle or be placed somewhere similar that can support such a large and heavy clock. While it is not impossible to find much information on Muller's Sons Clocks on the Internet, a small amount of information and examples are listed and shown there. This is a very rare clock and most likely is one of a kind.
