Item #577 - Antique Gold Scale

Description: The gold scales are very good quality and work well. Once you place weights and the item you want weighed in the opposing brass trays, you press a button on the lever in front of the scales and it raises the whole balance beam allowing the scale to function. Prior to pressing on the lever the brass trays are resting on the wooden base. The scale balances well and moves freely. On top of the balance beam there appears to be a fine tuning adjustment that will swivel to either side. The wooden base shows age and is a deep dark mahogany color, it is a hardwood like walnut but not sure. The underside of the drawer and cabinet show age darkening. Inside of the drawer there is an old set of directions which are only half complete as the bottom portion is missing, it also looks as something was spilled inside. The set of weights, in the wooden holder, are missing a few smaller, individual weights. There is a small round tin container with many weights, which are measured in grains. As seen in the pictures this scale breaks down and packs into the drawer for easy transportation. Judging from the patina on the box and metal, bronze brass and copper, screw heads and construction it would be easy to assume this scale was made in the mid 19th century. There are no marks or signature to identify the maker. There are what look like certification seals attached to the top of the cabinet but are unreadable.
