Item #1173 - Authentic Wells Fargo Gold Scale - San Francisco

Description: This item to be purchased with a money order only. These Wells Fargo Gold scales are of exceptional quality and condition and we believe to be a museum quality piece. The wood case appears to be a hard wood and may be a red walnut. The scales are made of brass with crystal at all pivot points to reduce friction. There are no weights included with this gram scale. The balance indicator is porcelain. The scales are enclosed in a glass case because the movement of any air causes the scales to rock. They are extremely accurate scales. The base of the scale sits on three legs with the front leg adjustable by a turn knob and a ball on a string, with the string going through a metal loop, as a balance indicator. Nothing can be found as to who manufactured these scales other than the Wells Fargo Plaque. Judging by the patina, construction, screws and parts it is easy to date this item to the mid to late 19th century. The case stands 15 inches tall by 16 1/4 inches wide and is 8 1/2 inches deep. The only problem with this scale is that there are 2 rope cords, attached to the bottom front slide up glass door, at each side, that have broken. These rope cords are attached to weights that are inside the front wooden columns and hold the door up just the same as a window in an old house is held up by counterweights. There are brass screws on the top of the case that can be removed to replace the rope cords.
